System Crises, New Normal

New Normal System Crises--

Peter Bjerregaard: System Crises Is the New Normal: " . . . The financial crisis wasn't an isolated event, but a manifestation of a new normal. A new normal characterized by extreme turbulence and an unprecedented connectivity between different global crises (economic crisis, climate crisis, food crisis, resource crisis, etc.). The global economy exceeds the planetary boundaries, resource prices are rising, unemployment rates are record high and social instability and inequality is growing in many countries. At the same time, the solutions to these crises need to be approached in a new manner. The 19th -and 20th-century model of thinking, where one problem is solved individually, is grossly outdated given the connectedness of the current challenges. It no longer makes sense to tackle unemployment by increasing the demand of goods, if the production of goods causes climate changes, pollution and higher resource prices. However, if the transition to a greener economy is to succeed, a new way of thinking is needed in order to address the connectedness of the different crises. System crises, in short, is the new normal. . . . (read more at link above)

Creating the New Normal

zenhabits: "Here’s the process: (Habit Mastery: Creating the New Normal)--
  1. Start small. What’s the smallest increment you can do? Do this for at least 3 days, preferably 4-5.
  2. Get started. Starting the change each day is the most important thing. Want to run? Just get out the door. Want to meditate? Just get on the cushion.
  3. Enjoy the change. Don’t look at this as a sacrifice. It’s fun, it’s learning, it’s a challenge.
  4. Stick to the change. Notice your urge to quit. Don’t act on it. Keep going.
  5. Adjust again. When the change becomes normal, make another small adjustment.
This is the process of creating a new normal. It’s beautiful and simple." (read more at link above)

New Normal Positive Deviance, part 2 video

A “New Normal” for social change interventions: Focus on the positive deviants--

Between 1986 and 2007 over 50,000 children in Northern Uganda were abducted by the Lords Resistance Army. Children were exploited as porters, sex slaves, and soldiers. As the conflict died down many children escaped or were rescued. However, the return of the children to the community was met with resistance since the children were viewed as having sided with the enemy. Many girls resorted to selling their bodies to survive, but some girls, the Positive Deviants found ways to effectively reintegrate into their communities through daily practices. This video documents the strategies used by the Positive Deviant girls, such as collecting extra firewood and water to sell, and listening to mentors.
